Longsuffering
Galatians 5:22
makrothumia (orechruach)- longsuffering (patience)
In this life we often want to retaliate because of persecution,
opposition, and disagreements. Romans 12:19 says, “Dearly
beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath:
for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” God
alone is The One Who brings correction. Even though we may have
abilities to avenge, refraining from taking matters in our own hands
and placing the situation in God’s care brings greater growth in this
virtue. When we bear trials without complaint, we exhibit our trust
in God to fight those battles for us. Longsuffering is actually
patience. The Greek word “makros” means “long” and “thumos”
means “temper”. Therefore, we are to be patient in speaking and
also choose our response carefully. We are not to act hastily when
facing opposition in any situation.
