Galatians 5:22agathosune (chesed)- goodnessA good majority of people would probably recognize goodness as a personal trait rather than a spiritual virtue; however, that is actually missing the whole point on the fact that we could never be “good” by our own merits. Those who think that by doing good means they work their way to heaven follow misconception. Salvation is a free gift from God through Jesus Christ His Son. We do not make it to heaven on our own good works, and the work that we do can only be done through the work that God has done within us. As a believer in Christ Jesus, The Holy Spirit does a work within us to transform our minds and hearts. By walking according to His purposes working within us, there is a selfless desire to have an open heart toward others in a generous way whether they deserve it or not. It does not get us to heaven faster or quicker to do good to others; instead, we need to do our duty to give in the caring way that is pleasing to The Lord, not out of pride or selfish ambition. We give generously in the way that God directs us by actions that are honest and wholesome with the right motives. Only by God’s grace and goodness given to us could we ever truly exhibit this effectively to others. We need to maintain good work for The LORD by doing it honestly. It is good to make known that God is Good to us although we do not deserve it; also, we need to realize that His judgments are also sure. Also refer to Titus 3:8; Ephesians 5:9; and Romans 15:14
